More on the Clown and the Movie's Storyline

“Just say no to the clown”, “staying on track each day keeps the clown away”, “only you can prevent clowns” – these are just a few of the catch phrases being used by the new movie from the makers of WebMarketingTrack.com entitled “Yianni Stamas’ Diary of a Mad Magician”, a cautionary tale about the importance of focus and avoiding self destructive behavior when trying to achieve goals – in this instance the magician’s desire to eliminate issues in his Northern Manhattan neighborhood so he can start a family with his wife.

“Diary of a Mad Magician” is a first-person video blog or vlog-style feature film that consists of documentary footage of the community issues of the Inwood/Washington Heights area as well as interviews with actors from some of the most popular mystery, horror, thriller motion pictures of all time including the original Bella Lugosi version of Dracula, Rob Zombie’s The Devil’s Rejects and the villain from two James Bond movies.

As filmmaker Yianni Stamas explains it “The documentary material is being transformed through a process called SurrealOVsion to tell the fictional story of a promoter prestidigitator who gets derailed from his web marketing track to transform his neighborhood and listens instead to Creepy Clown NYC and his Disciples of Denial.”

Stamas further elaborates that he and his VideoFilmWeb.com Inc. staff have for more than ten years been fortunate in either directing or currently having as web marketing track clients actors and members of other industries who have won Oscars (Nicolas Cage), Emmys (LeVar Burton), Golden Globes (Irene Miracle) and Tonys (John Gallagher Jr.) as well as successful small businesses like the 9 salon hair chain Dramatics NYC and institutions such as Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and The Film Society of Lincoln Center.

Yianni got the idea for the movie because of his work with his customized web marketing track system to help performers, small business owners and service professionals get clients or jobs, retain loyalty and generate referrals through classes, kits, campaigns and personal coaching.

Stamas says

“I began to notice a pattern sometimes in myself and once in a while in my clients that at pivotal moments when faced with a fork in the road, even though the steps for success were very clear, there appeared an intangible urge to listen to the subconscious voice of “the clown” – a metaphor for negative behavior. This condition of thinking then often leads to going down what on the surface could be rationalized as the correct track but is in reality the wrong path - a case of fooling one's self."

And Yianni knows a thing or two about illusion versus truth, he is a former professional magician turned filmmaker who got his career launch working with “Godfather” director Francis Ford Coppola and his brother August at Zoetrope Studios in Hollywood for three years. Stamas made the move to New York shortly thereafter and has now been a proud New Yorker for more than twenty years.

He currently runs WebMarketingTrack.com Studios at Dramatics NYC, a media facility downstairs in the salon on Second Avenue between 47th and 48th where in addition to a full service marketing company he helms an internship program in partnership with TCI College of Technology teaching students primarily majoring in digital media arts to succeed in their craft and career, a program inspired by his work with the Coppola brothers.

Says Stamas -

“Diary of a Mad Magician” is a labor of love movie I'm making with the help of my students, clients and celebrities I know, using satire to try to get the message out there that you already have everything you need if you just get help understanding what that track is…as well as beware of clowns bearing gifts”.

This concept goes to the heart of the movie’s storyline which is of a conjurer who has good intentions to try to eliminate local problems like deaths due to playing in fire hydrant spray that blinds windshields, littering and covert behavior by real estate vendors and the related.

Then Creepy Clown NYC (played by Jason Schilling Kendal of “Inwood Astronomy”) comes forward offering a bizarre reverse psychology plan to convince residents not to perpetrate issues, whereupon the Manhattan Magician (portrayed by Stamas himself) succumbs to derailing his web marketing track.

What follows is the mysterious vanishing and murder of the clown and the magician’s descent into madness as he documents himself with his camcorder attempting to uncover what really happened to the clown and why as the line blurs between reality and fantasy.

Yianni explains:

"People who know me always ask me if the storyline of a magician buying a condo with his wife and wanting to start a family and then being horrified by the community issues has anything to do with my real life which is somewhat similar. And I say not really things because things are very different in the movie.. For example even though we shot in our condo as a location at one point there's a scene where my character, my wife's character and the clown and the handler are all playing a board game in our living room. That's a perfect example of a big difference - in real life I rarely play board games."

When asked what SurrealOvision is, Yianni responds

“it’s kind of like candy, tastes good but has its side effects, let’s put it this way, if after watching the movie you start to find yourself compelled to follow a guy in a mask with the initials C.C.N.Y.C. you might want to think twice about it – “ then he adds with a laugh “you might want to enroll in one of our Web Marketing Track classes.”

Yianni Stamas’ Diary of a Mad Magician, in its original release as an episodic thrillumentary consisting of 45 weeks of two minute thrillisodes, attracted the support of community betterment organizations like Bette Midler’s New York Restoration Project as well as brought visibility to issues through NY1 and a cover story in Inwood’s local paper “The Manhattan Times”. This visibility lead to the mayor of New York taking action and virtually eliminating the fire hydrant problem in Inwood, Manhattan where Yianni lives with his wife.

Now Yianni is putting all the pieces of the puzzle together with the feature being seen in its entirety for the first time in and around Halloween. Stamas also promises to include elements of the StageMeetsScreen.com project he shot and edited for over 5 years for Lincoln Center which combined live action with montages shown on the screen at the Walter Reade Theater.

Stamas will dust off his top hat and put on a brief magic show before the movie screening as well as attempt to raise his idol Harry Houdini from beyond the grave who died on All Hallow’s Eve in 1926. It is an interesting side note that Houdini’s wife Bessie spent the last ten years of her life trying to contact her husband on “the other side” while living in a building just a few blocks from where most of “Diary of a Mad Magician” was shot.”

In the plot line of “Diary” the magician loses his mind to such an extent that he begins to believe that the only way he can find out what really happened to the clown is to ask Houdini. Will the Manhattan Magician ultimately be able to follow the mantras “Just say no to the clown”, “staying on track each day keeps the clown away”, “only you can prevent clowns”?
